Plan ahead

Making a business trip, relocation or just a quick visit. Make sure you plan ahead. This article gives you an idea how Edgemap instance could save your day when things go south.

What is Edgemap

Edgemap is open source project which demonstrates resilience both in development and in use. It's not fully featured product but could serve you well in critical situations or give you some baseline to develop your own capability. It promotes 'maker skills' and adaptation when needed.

Travels and risks

Traveling alone or for organization includes similar risk management aspects. More on regions under potential threats. Without getting into geopolitics - managing risks globally is now needed more than ever.

Risk management could include preparations, planning and actions on given geographies. Coordinating these requires quite a bit of planning. Which is easy when you prepare yourself before travels.

Recalling these notes, planning and executing when in distress is a another thing. Especially if Internet access or electricity is not anymore available. You might lose access to these if you have to re-locate yourself in shelter, infrastructure is being damaged or your gears gets compromised.

When lights go out, you recall Edgemap.

What Edgemap could do for you

Edgemap is small and standalone mapping system with full world map inbuilt. It does not require working Internet connection and can run hours from USB power bank. It is used with Web browser and no additional apps needs to be installed.

With Edgemap you can:

  • Plan before and during your travels, browse locations and familiarize yourself to environment.
  • Store important locations ('geo markers') to file which you can recall later
  • Plan during crisis for best action to take next
  • Optionally you can also communicate out-of-band with LoRA based Meshtastic

→ All these actions can be done without active Internet connection.

→ Keeping your geo markers in local file is resiliency and operational security (OPSEC)

Organization benefits

If you are operating on high risk regions you can hand over Edgemap units to personnel and make sure they have critical information at hand when needed. No need to access email, dropbox or cloud stored documentation.

With this offline approach you also secure your preparations planning.

Example

Your next stops are in Estonia and Poland. You need to spend few weeks at those regions and be aware of threats, medical care and life supplies.

You equip yourself with:

  • Edgemap unit in small pouch
  • USB powerbank
  • Computer or smart phone with a web browser
  • Two mission files: poland.geojson and estonia.geojson

With Edgemap pouch:

  • You can plan and have access to map no matter what happens
  • You can load pre-planned locations of medical facilities, life supplies and shelters.
  • You don't need Internet, GPS or mains electricity

How it looks like

Your organization has prepared following locations for you in case you need to leave your post. With Edgemap you can visualize and navigate even in GPS denied environments and without any support from host nation infrastructure.

Conclusion

If your corporate IT emailed you an dropbox link from starbucks, make sure you have a bit more with you.

Email them this page and tell them that you need resilient and off line capable tool to document, plan and execute.

Don't be victim of corporate IT.
